Know Your BDM: Matt Aston, Barclays
Our Know Your BDM series continues with Barclays' business development manager, Matt Aston from Cardiff in the hotseat.

1. How many brokers do you see in a week?

The benefit of the job is that every week is different, from attending oadshows, running a slot in a brokers sales meeting to one to one meetings, which will drive the number of brokers seen in any one week. So, it is hard to put an actual figure on this. The key objective being to add value to the broker and providing a personal service to them.

2. What issues come up time and time again?

I would say a mixture of affordability and sources of income. I always encourage brokers to discuss cases pre-submission to ensure they are clear on what we can accept, the supporting documentation needed an how the income is then applied to our affordability calculator.

3. Favourite part of your job?

This has to be the variety of brokers that you deal with day to day and helping them to grow their business – I have been lucky to cover a number of different post code areas and built great relationships with brokers working in a variety of markets. A BDM works as their business partner. It’s great to meet new brokers.

4. Biggest challenge?

Knowing when to switch off – there is always somebody to help at different times of the day and being able to support my brokers is extremely satisfying.

5. Strangest question you’ve ever been asked?

There is always something a little different that comes up most weeks which highlights the varied enquiries brokers are trying to place

6. What do you wish brokers understood about your job?

Brokers in our industry are often experienced so have built a good understanding of the role we do and how this has changed over the years. A BDM works closely with their practices to seize new opportunities but does not make the final lending decision so always check those quirky cases before application

7. Last film you saw at the cinema?

Skyfall – you can’t beat a good Bond film

8. Least favourite sport?

What is there not to like about sport – from individual events to team games – I like nothing better than following my hometown team Leicester City (and convince myself they are somehow going to make a late surge up the table)

9. Current mobile phone?

Blackberry

10. Favourite Biscuit?

It has got to be the classic hobnob
