Know Your BDM: Colin Hammond, Santander
Mortgage Solutions’ Know Your BDM series gives brokers the chance to get to know their local business development managers a little better. In the hot seat this week is Santander's Colin Hammond, BDM for East Region, covering the Cambridge & Peterborough area.

How many brokers do you see in a week?

I try to see as many brokers face to face as possible, it’s the best bit of my job. Depending on the week I can see any number from 12 -20. For a normal week I see 16.

What issues come up time and time again?

The majority of the time I am asked about why a case has been declined. There are lots of cases that are simple on the surface, but then when you get into them, they aren’t straight forward at all.

Favourite part of your job?

I really enjoy meeting brokers and helping them sort out any issues they have or problems they are facing. It’s really rewarding to solve problems and come up with a good solution that works for everyone.

Biggest challenge?

My biggest challenge is to visit every single one of my brokers in a quarter. It is difficult but I am determined to do it one quarter soon.

Strangest question you’ve ever been asked?

I think it would have to be when I was speaking to someone on the phone and was asked which part of Wales I was from. But am South African and don’t sound anything like the Welsh!

What do you wish brokers understood about your job?

I think brokers do have a very good understanding of what we do. If there was one thing, maybe it would be that I look after about 280 brokers so I am really busy at times.

Last film you saw at the cinema?

Olympus has Fallen, it was brilliant, definitely worth a watch.

Least favourite sport?

I’m not the biggest Snooker fan.

Current mobile phone?

I have a Blackberry for work and use a Samsung for everything else.

Favourite Biscuit?

It would have to be Royal Creams, they’re a delicious South African biscuit.
