Homeowners purchasing building and contents insurance through an intermediary could save almost £2,500, according to research by AA Insurance Services

While most borrowers opt for cover through their lender, homeowners would get a better deal if they bought through an intermediary, saving £1,180 on buildings insurance and £1,195 on contents insurance over 25 years

At present the average cost of building insurance from a bank or building society is £131.86 compared to £120.10 from a direct insurer and £111.65 from an intermediary

For contents insurance the average cost from a bank or building society is £128.48 and £129.95 from a direct insurer but just £106.33 through an intermediary
