Britain’s self-employed and contract workers are missing out on mortgage payment protection insurance (MPPI), according to Abbey National Home Insurance.
While percentage increases in MPPI outstripped the increase in mortgages six-fold between 1998 and 2000, and despite self-employed and contract workers accounting for over 10% of the workforce, research by Abbey National indicates self-employed customers account for less than 2.5% of all new MPPI policies.
Lloyd Wilson, head of insurance marketing at Abbey National, said: ‘The widespread uncertainty about the scope of MPPI means people who would otherwise use the protection to cover themselves do not do so.’
