2,000 Abbey National employees will have to apply for new roles in the bank as their old positions are re-evaluated, in a company-wide restructuring.

Morag Fleming, spokeswoman for Abbey, said: ‘The restructuring is designed to ensure there are more of the right people in the right place.’ Although she could not guarantee all existing staff would be given jobs, Fleming said the overall result of the restructuring would be to create around 450 jobs.

Fleming hoped re-applications would be completed by the end of June, at which stage Abbey would be able to assess exactly how many extra staff were needed.

Luqman Arnold, chief executive of Abbey, has introduced the initiative to turn around losses of almost £1bn. Abbey has almost 750 branches in the UK employing 7,200 branch-based staff.
