John Goodfellow, chief executive of the Skipton Building Society, has been elected chairman of the Building Societies Association (BSA), replacing Graham Stow who has held the position for the past year.

Commenting on his appointment, Goodfellow said mutuals have a key role to play in offering financial services to customers by challenging banks on product innovation, price and levels of service. He added: ‘Building societies are not ‘hide-bound’ by the banks’ first principle ‘ having to pay dividends to shareholders.’

Appointed chief executive of Skipton in 1991, he is also a director of the Yorkshire Partnership Investment Fund, chairman of Business Link York, and a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers.
