Steve Jobs and other “lucky buggers”: A sketch of #TME2012

A green, wooded university campus may not seem the most likely place for a gathering of representatives from the housing market.

But inside the East Midlands Conference Centre speaker after speaker at The Mortgage Event yesterday fired off market updates, sales advice and the latest research.

YBS chief economist Andrew McPhilips kicked the morning off with an overview of the economy, while AMI head of policy Alex Revell provided a similarly thorough update to the Mortgage Market Review.

It was not all LTVs and regulations, though. BDRC Continental director Mark Long wistfully brought the audience’s attention to the “lucky buggers” section of the landlord community who owned their property outright, before highlighting the continued importance of intermediaries in securing loans.

There was also plenty of blue sky thinking about the use of bridging loans and even peer to peer lending. But the prize for the most imaginative speaker should go to Finance Planning Group director Dan Maskell, who underlined his reasons for selling protection with pictures of Whitney Houston, Steve Jobs and other celebrities who met an early death this year.

But on a brighter note, the good news is The Mortgage Event will definitely be coming back next year, unlike Dan Maskell’s celebrities.
