Mansfield Building Society has appointed its first business development manager ahead of plans to increase mortgage lending.

The mutual, which sells roughly three-quarters of mortgage products through brokers, has hired former Paymentshield manager Richard Scott in an attempt to improve the service it offers intermediaries.

While Mansfield expects its ratio of lending via intermediaries to stay stable, it anticipates volumes to increase. The mutual is planning to lend £55m this year, compared to just under £50m in the previous one. It aims for further growth over the next few years.

Mansfield sales and marketing manager Mike Taylor said: “What this is about is making sure we have got focused support for mortgage brokers. This is the start of what might be something bigger.”

The mutual made headlines in August when it followed high street lenders and launched a Help to Buy equity loan product. It also specialises in shared ownership products and local 95% loan-to-value deals.
