• UK motorists could save hundreds of pounds if a Government crackdown on motor insurance is put into place, according to UK & Ireland Insurance Services. The company has called for visible insurance discs to be introduced on all cars to reduce the number of British motorists taking to the roads without cover. Julian Robinson, commercial manager at Insurance Services said accidents involving uninsured drivers cost the British public £500m each year. He said insurance cheats would always find opportunities to bend the rules, but the benefits of displaying vehicle insurance details far outweighed the drawbacks.

• Household collectors of art and antiques are under-insuring their home contents, according to a report by insurer Hiscox and broker, Aon. The survey revealed that many homeowners were spending an increasing amount on collecting arts, antiques and valuables, yet failed to ensure the items were adequately covered by their home and contents insurance. It said 80% of those surveyed, failed to have adequate cover, while the same amount of collectors insured art and antiques on a standard home insurance policy with only 2% opting for specialist contents cover.

• Accident management and credit hire firm Prestige Auto Group has expanded its claims department and is formulating plans to start selling commercial motor insurance within the next 12 months. Cathy Kurd, claims manager at Prestige, said the expansion would help speed up the turnover of claims and allow for its move into commercial insurance next year.
