Know Your BDM: Paul Weatherhogg, Kensington
Mortgage Solutions’ Know Your BDM series gives brokers the chance to get to know their local business development managers a little better.

We ask BDMs up and down the country for their answers to the following 10 questions. In this edition Paul Weatherhogg, Kensington BDM for the London North, is under the spotlight.

How many brokers do you see in a week?
On average, I see 16 firms a week. Some weeks more, some weeks less.

What issues come up time and time again?
Two situations that come up on a regular basis are cases where a client has complex income or a small blip on their credit file. We can consider up to 100% of bonus/overtime/ commission/ second jobs.

We will also work off one year’s accounts for the self-employed and contractor income is calculated on current weekly contract x 46.

We can also look at clients that have failed a credit score and which require a common sense approach to lending rather than an automated credit score. These two issues are something we deal with on a daily basis and it is what we do best.

Favourite part of your job?
The best part of my job is solving problems and getting brokers to recognise Kensington as their specialist lender of choice. It’s about letting them know that we take the time to understand the client’s needs and wants and agreeing a case when other lenders have said no.

Biggest challenge?
It is often difficult to call it a day. Turning off the phone/iPad/laptop can be a real struggle sometimes in the evening and at weekends.

Strangest question you’ve ever been asked?
A broker I worked with had clients who worked in the adult entertainment industry. I was asked if a copy of the client’s latest DVD would help the underwriter reach the right decision.

What do you wish brokers understood about your job?
I would like everyone to understand that we are all working with the same objective which is to offer a professional service and complete on good quality mortgage business.

Last film you saw at the cinema?
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

Least favourite sport?
Squash.

Current mobile phone?
Blackberry Q10.

Favourite biscuit?
Jaffa Cake – it’s almost a biscuit..
