Direct investment in commercial property produced greater returns than all other mainstream institutional asset classes last year, according to the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

A spokesman for RICS, said: ‘Financial returns in the commercial property sector have outperformed traditional ‘safe haven’ assets such as Government bonds and gold over the past year, due to the appeal of property’s relatively high income returns.’ The 12 months to December 2002 bought returns of 10.5% in commercial property, 10.3% in Government bonds, 9.1% in gold, and a loss of 22.7% in equities. RICS predicted a rapid and successful conclusion to any conflict in Iraq would boost commercial property returns further.
