New rules on the use of third party data in consumer lending will come into force before the end of 2004, according to the information commissioner, Richard Thomas.

The rules will affect how the consumer credit industry uses personal information about another individual, such as a husband, wife or partner, when someone applies for a loan.

The new rules will allow people to opt out of giving credit reference agencies and lenders the automatic use of their financial partner’s data, allowing them to be assessed in their own right.
