Over 27,000 consumers sought guidance from an independent financial adviser (IFA) in October as investments are being re-examined with the prospect of an economic recovery in sight, according to the latest Advice Drivers report from Unbiased.

Retirement planning, investment and savings were the top triggers for those seeking advice in October.

Over a third (37%) of searches through the ‘find an IFA’ service was for advice on personal retirement planning, an increase of 4% since June.

The second most popular search was for advice on investments and savings with 27% of searches made in this area, an increase from 23% in June.

Mortgages were the third most popular search, making up 10% of all requests in October.

Karen Barrett, chief executive of Unbiased, said people are putting their faith in IFAs to help them plan their finances because they are worried about how the credit crunch will affect their savings, investments and pensions.

She said: “In changing market conditions, consumers need expert advice more than ever, and IFAs are the best positioned to serve these needs. Only an IFA can take a holistic view of finances and recommend solutions from across the whole of market.”
