SFO conviction rate tops 90%
The Serious Fraud Office (SFO) has increased its conviction rate in cases brought before the courts to more than 90%.

The rate, measured as defendants convicted over the number tried, has risen to 91% for 2009/10, up from 78% the previous year.

Elsewhere fines against companies charged with acting fraudulently, which stood at zero in 2008/09, amounted to nearly £12m this year.

The agency has managed to seize nearly a quarter of a million pounds in cash since November 2009, using new powers to be able to carry out searches for cash and retain the money as an investigation continues.

Approximately £4m was paid out in direct compensation in 2009/10, up from “significantly” less than £1m the year before.

The SFO also achieved a 100% success rate in trials where at least one defendant was convicted, up from 94% for 2008/09.

Everyone in the country pays 73p towards the SFO’s work, down from 83p last year.

SFO says it will “aim to provide better value next year”.

Director Richard Alderman said: “This year has seen a number of firsts for us, including the first-ever UK prosecution for breaching UN sanctions and use of cash seizure and other powers to return more money to victims of fraud and corruption.

“With reduced funding we continue to work in innovative ways.”

Today’s figures have been released in advance of SFO’s annual report, which will be published in the summer.
