Complaints against mortgage firms edged up in the second half of 2009 to 13,232, according to figures from the FSA.

Data released by the regulator revealed that complaints relating to mortgage firms, including lenders and brokers, increased by 598 from 12,634 in the first half of 2009.

Of the complaints made in the second half of the year, 34% (4185) were upheld compared to 31% (3802) of complaints in the first half of last year.

Complaints  about arrears handling rose significantly from 39,226 to 50,004 across the two halves of the year, with 5576 relating to home finance.

Home finance products, including equity release, impaired credit mortgages and other regulated and unregulated home finance products, garnered 80,230 complaints in total, up from 58,666.

Almost half of the complaints (49%) were upheld.

Mortgage firms paid over £5m in redress during the latter half of 2009, while home finance redress totalled just over £11m.

Michael Brill, director of IFA Baronworth, said: “I would have thought that the increase relates to lenders not treating customers fairly regarding arrears. I do not see why complaints about advice should have risen. Brokers should have more robust systems in place than ever before.

“Obviously, any IFA or financial broker that has been dishonest deserves to be fined and suspended.”
