World Cup 2010 Blog – Leader of the pack

Even a penalty shoot-out wasn’t enough to save yesterday’s matches from being two of the more forgettable games of the tournament and so, with a break before the quarter finals kick off on Friday, it seems a good time to reflect on the competition that really matters – the Fantasy World Cup.

Topping the table is Get to the Chopper, a team submitted by Bill Evans, which has 373 points, including a massive contribution of 40 points from the Netherlands’ Wesley Sneijder in midfield.

Just five points behind is the rather presumptuously named World Cup Winners, chosen by Ian Willcox. Ian will be hoping that his side will be able to claw back the deficit in the last eight games of the tournament as even a respectable second place finish will still look like underachievement when given the lofty prediction of the team’s name.

But he’ll also be looking over his shoulder as Norn Iron (sic), chosen by Graeme Norris is making a charge on 366 points with a controversial 5-3-2 formation and four Brazilians in his side.

Making up the rest of the top five are JDs Hot Leads, chosen by Roy Armstrong and Woodside Wanderers from Dean Stewart.

They, and the other sides closely behind them, are all in contention as we enter the penultimate weekend of the World Cup and get closer to finding out which “lucky” winner will win tickets to see England’s first game after the tournament at Wembley in September.
