Remortgaging rises 35% year-on-year
The number of remortgage approvals increased in February by 35% year-on-year to 35,725 worth £4.7bn, according to the Bank of England.

Its latest figures showed that remortgage approvals were up from 26,469 in February 2010 and higher than the previous six-month average of 31,674.

Total mortgage approvals for the month came in at 102,871 worth £11.9bn, up from 98, 906 in February 2010.

House purchase approvals remained relatively static at 46,967 in February, with almost no change year-on-year.

Nevertheless, the month’s total for house purchase was higher than the previous six-month average of 46,413.

Approvals for other purchases remained subdued at 20,180, down on the previous six-month average of 22,272.

The Bank of England figures showed that lending secured on houses rose £1.2bn compared to the six-month average of £1.0bn. Yet, annual growth remained unchanged at 0.7%, while the three-month growth rate increased 0.1% to 0.9%.

Gross mortgage lending was £11.3bn in February, the same as the previous six-month average and only modestly down on January’s £11.7bn.

Repayments in February remained the same as the previous month at £11.3bn, but up on the six-month average of £10.9bn.
