UK unemployment set to get worse – CIPD
Unemployment levels will get worse before the end of the year as job losses look set to outpace hires, the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) has said.

According to its latest research, employers in the public, private and voluntary sectors intend to add fewer jobs but also make fewer cuts than in recent quarters, the Telegraph reported.

“Many firms appear to be locked in wait and see mode, with some companies scaling back on all employment decisions against a backdrop of increasing uncertainty as a result of the eurozone crisis and wider global economic turmoil,” said Gerwyn Davies, public policy adviser at the CIPD.

The CIPD’s employment index, which measures the difference between the number of employers that intend to increase their workforce and those that plan to shrink it, fell to -3 from -1 for Q3.

“Recruitment intentions are falling, which will make further rises in unemployment therefore seem inevitable.

“There is no immediate sign of UK labour market conditions improving in the short or medium term,” Davies added.

The CIPD’s report was published ahead of new unemployment figures on Wednesday which will show whether the youth jobless total has gone over a million.
