More than a third of people in the UK have spent less on food to prioritise rent or mortgage payments and 22% have turned down basics like the heating, said a survey.

The housing charity Shelter surveyed 4,014 people to reveal 26m more people have struggled with housing costs since 2008.

With mortgages at their most affordable for a decade, according to Barclays figures, this highlights the daily struggle for households in the UK.

Campbell Robb, chief executive of Shelter, said: “These staggering findings show just how many millions of people are cutting back on essentials as the continued squeeze on incomes starts to bite.

“Every two minutes someone in Britain is at risk of losing their home. We strongly urge anyone struggling to pay their rent or mortgage to seek advice as early as possible.”
