Regrets, I’ve had a few, but then again…
Now we're properly into the spring it reminds me that this is a time when people often contemplate making a new start.

However, many of us never really get round to it, unless of course we’re forced to. So what is it that holds us back and what can we do to improve our chances of letting go of our safety blanket and having ‘too few to mention’ regrets?

There are numerous reasons why we hesitate over a decision and end up doing nothing. But I’ll keep it simple and share one cause and one solution.

When we are tentative, it is often because we are locked on the horns of a dilemma. For example, should I take a risk and join a new start-up company?

If we’re conflicted it’s probably because we’re being pulled in separate directions by two of our parents’ core values, ethics we inherited growing up.

You could have your dad suggesting you take the risk and ride the wave, while your mum might be more cautious and urge you to stick with the secure employment you are currently in.

In this example, it’s easy to see why it’s almost impossible to make the decision. I recommend using the ‘mum and dad test’ as a diagnostic tool.

If they both would have given you different advice on the opportunity then you’ll know why your progress is blocked.

The solution is two-fold. Ask yourself which of the two parents would have made the right decision? If you know, go with that one.

If not, this is the time to trust your intuition. We’ve all got a natural instinct about whether or not something is right for us, so practice paying attention to your inner voice. You won’t always get it right but I’m certain you’ll have fewer regrets.
