HMRC taskforce to target buy-to-let tax dodgers
HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has launched a new taskforce to clamp down on tax evasion within the rental sector.

Durham, East Anglia, Leeds, Leicester, Lincoln, London, Nottingham, Sunderland and York are the areas being targeted in a scheme expected to recover around £17million from buy-to-let landlords trying to avoid tax.

Thirty taskforces will be launched during 2012/13 to target specific high-risk trade sectors and locations around the UK.

Mike Eland, director general of enforcement and compliance at HMRC, said: “These new taskforces will bring together specialists from across HMRC to tackle tax dodgers.

“If you have paid all your taxes you have nothing to worry about. But deliberately evading tax can land you a heavy fine or even a criminal prosecution as well.

“This is not an empty threat – HMRC can and will track you down if you choose to break the rules.”
