Mortgage adviser in two couple con jailed for 18 months
A mortgage adviser who scammed a pair of elderly couples out of £40,000 has been sentenced to 18 months in prison.

John Anderson of Dundee advised Jeanette and Findlay Drummond to take out an additional £10,000 on their property between January and October 2008. He then talked them into handing the extra cash over to him.

STV News reports the fraudster, who has the middle name Money, promised to pay the money back in instalments, but made just two payments, totalling £536.

Anderson, 65, then moved onto another couple in the area, James and Jessie Hill, and advised them to release equity from their property. He told them to take £60,000 of equity from the property and then give him £30,000 to invest on their behalf.

The scammer then made two £250 payments to the couple before disappearing. Mr Hill tracked Anderson down and asked for his money back, but the latter claimed he had gone bankrupt and was unable to return the cash.

Nicola Gillespie, prosecuting, told the court that Anderson had withdrew cash ‘on almost a daily basis’ during the early part of 2009.

“It was withdrawn in cash or through cheques made out to himself. By July 14, 2009 the account contained only £109.01,” she said.

Anderson pleaded guilty to obtaining £10,343 by fraud from the Drummonds and £28,621 from the Hills at Dundee Sheriff Court and was sentenced to 18 months behind bars.

Sheriff Tom Hughes commented: “These offences from what I have heard involved a series of deceptions by you against various persons. They have caused considerable hardship to the individuals concerned, and substantial loss.”

Solicitor John Boyle said of Anderson: “He regrets his actions and is ashamed of them.”
