Autumn statement: Advisers call for Stamp Duty holiday
A quarter of advisers are eager to see another Stamp Duty holiday announced in the Autumn statement on Wednesday next week.

According to a poll from Avelo, advisers would also support a change to the Stamp Duty charging structure overall after the holiday came to an end on 24 March this year.

When the government culled the holiday, the move had done little to bolster the first-time buyer market, advisers were overwhelmingly in favour of extending the holiday, with 49% saying it would become harder for FTBs.

Meanwhile, more than 28% of the advisers polled thought the statement should focus on supporting small business, including enhanced access to finance.

One in five advisers feel the government should take active steps to stimulate consumer spending and 30% think VAT should remain at the same level.

Paul Yates, strategy and product development director, Avelo, said: “Our latest poll gives us a clear steer on the overall sentiment of the adviser community – and judging from their response, the clear call is for the Government to take active steps to embrace growth. Obviously, this is not an easy fix and further measures must be taken to get the UK economy back on track but, our sample is clear: deficit reduction is not enough.”
