A mortgage broker has left the industry to become a professional footballer with Championship side Ipswich Town.

Mortgage adviser Tyrone Mings, 19, has penned an 18-month contract with the Tractor Boys after impressing club scouts while playing for non-league side Chippenham Town.

Mings had been working as a mortgage broker at London & Country since the start of the year while playing for Chippenham.

He had previously been a youth team player at Southampton, where he played in the same team as Arsenal and England star Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The left back was then recommended to Ipswich boss Mick McCarthy who took the player on trial and was impressed enough to hand Mings a professional contract the following week.

“It’s just been a crazy time really,” Mings told the Ipswich Town official website.

“This time last week I was putting a suit on and going to work as a mortgage broker. Something I have been doing for nine months.”

Town manager McCarthy added: “He’s only 19 but plays the game like a bloke. He’s a good talker, organises and we’re delighted to have him in.

“There is loads to work with. We are going to give him an opportunity and it will be great if it works out.”
