Broker fights for disgraced MP Huhne’s old seat
A mortgage adviser is running as the Liberal Democrat candidate to replace Chris Huhne as an MP.

Mike Thornton, who worked as an adviser at Southampton-based Simply Finance as well as being a parish and borough councillor since 2007, will contest the ex-cabinet minister’s former Eastleigh seat in an upcoming by-election.

Huhne resigned as an MP earlier this month after pleading guilty to perverting the course of justice.

Thornton told the Lib Dem Voice the opportunity was an incredible honour and he was excited about the campaign ahead: “Over the many years I have lived here with my family, I have got to know the key issues which local people want me to fight for. I have loved every minute of being a councillor and being part of the Liberal Democrat team.

“We have been delivering locally for two decades, and we’re now also delivering in Government. I’m confident I will continue with that incredible record, and ensure we have another Liberal Democrat MP.”

His election promises include working to bring more jobs and investment to the area, cutting income tax for local workers and protecting green spaces.

Formerly energy minister and a possible challenger to Nick Clegg, Huhne’s fall from grace began after his ex-wife accused him of forcing her to take his speeding points ten years previously.

Simply Finance-owner Ben Larkin said he wished Thornton well: “He was a competent and very compliant adviser and he always gave good service to the customers.

“He could follow in the footsteps of Huhne and become Secretary of State for Energy.”
