Money Advice Service users hit 2.5m
Almost half a million people used the Money Advice Service (MAS) in the last quarter of 2012, latest figures from the organisation show.

In total, more than 2.5m people have used the service since it was launched in April 2011.

MAS also said its users were satisfied with its service. It said eight out of ten people got the information they needed and seven out of ten said it had helped them decide on a course of action. Some 88% said they would use the service again.

MAS launched a web chat service in September last year, in addition to its web, phone and face-to-face offering.

Almost half a million action plans have been delivered in the financial year to date. Its target of reaching a million plans by the end of March is achievable, it said.

The service gave 40,000 free debt advice sessions in England and Wales during the last quarter. During the whole year 124,000 sessions were help, compared to 73,000 in the previous year.

Money Advice Service chief executive Caroline Rookes said: “Whatever your financial circumstances, good advice can make all the difference. So I’m encouraged to see more and more people using our services.

“Given the tough economic times, it’s really important we keep evolving what we do. And this will enable us to help more and more people – for all the benefits that brings in terms of financial security, peace of mind and quality of life”.

In January, MAS confirmed it reduced its staff numbers by almost two thirds during a year-long transformation project that began in February 2012.
