Nationwide backtracks over restrictions on benefit tenants
Nationwide Building Society has withdrawn an exclusion on buy-to-let mortgages with tenants who claim benefits following customer complaints.

Nationwide offers buy-to-let mortgages through its The Mortgage Works brand and had issued a clarification of terms and conditions in December to exclude tenants on benefits and Local Authority tenants.

The lender said the decision brought its criteria into line with other lenders but following concerns raised by customers it has taken the decision to remove the exclusion.

Richard Napier, divisional director of mortgages for the Nationwide Group, said the lender had listened to feedback from consumers before making the decision: “The buy-to-let sector is very important to us.

“We have listened to concerns that have been expressed by some of our customers, over the last few days, and believe this is the right way forward for The Mortgage Works, for landlords and for their tenants.”
