The centre will focus on technologies in key areas including; dementia, cancer, infectious diseases and surgical devices to make surgery quicker, faster and safer.
The London’s centre, together with centres in Boston, Shanghai and San Fransisco, will scout, develop and promote technologies to be used in the NHS and bring high-tech jobs and investment to the UK.
The centre will aim to promote new jobs and business for universities, research councils and research charities which will be directly hired to work on its science projects.
Hunt, secretary of state, speaking at the Innovation Expo 2013, said: “I want to give doctors and nurses the time and space to deliver patient centred care – to do this we need to innovate.
“Our universities are among the very best in the world and our scientists and clinicians are second to none. I am determined to cement and accelerate our position as the number one place for health and pharmaceutical companies to invest and grow and hopefully develop the next generation of medical breakthroughs.”
Paul Stoffels, chief scientific officer at Johnson & Johnson and worldwide chairman, Pharmaceuticals, said investing in science and technology held unprecedented opportunities to transform healthcare.
Ten new health and wellbeing management apps are also being launched at the Expo as part of the Health Apps Library that currently totals 70 apps.
