A senior intermediary industry manager will become the Bank of England’s first chief operating officer in July.

Santander head of retail distribution and intermediaries Charlotte Hogg will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the central bank from the beginning of next month.

The bank’s UK chief executive Ana Botín said Hogg’s former colleagues were proud of Hogg’s professional excellence and commitment to public service: “During her two years at Santander, Charlotte has re-shaped our Retail Distribution business.

“Her work has made us a more customer-centred organisation and has put us in a strong position for further development.”

Miguel Sard would assume direct responsibility for all mortgage channels, she added.

Hogg studied at Oxford and Harvard before entering the Bank as a graduate entrant in 1992. She then worked for McKinsey and Morgan Stanley before moving into the credit card industry. She took up her post at Santander in 2011.

Incoming Bank governor Mark Carney said he was delighted by the appointment: “My tenure at the Bank will oversee a significant transition.

“Charlotte brings an outstanding track record and breadth of experience that will help to catalyse that change and I look forward to working closely with her to realise the full potential of the new institutional structure of the Bank.”

As chief operating officer, she will have the same level of seniority as the deputy governors and be responsible for the Bank’s internal departments including human resources, finance, property, IT and security.
