Right to Buy council home scheme axed in Scotland
The Scottish government is to withdraw the Rent to Buy scheme, which had allowed council housing tenants to purchase at discounted prices.

The scheme was launched under Margret Thatcher’s government in 1980 and has seen over 450,000 homes transferred to tenants in Scotland since.

However, this has caused a sharp decline in the number of properties available for social housing and Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon will announce its abolition in Glasgow today.

In 2010 changes meant that new tenants were unable to access the scheme and from 2016 Right to Buy will be completely withdrawn.

Figures released earlier this year showed that 5,942 sales were completed across the UK under Right to Buy in 2012, almost double the figure recorded during the previous year.
