David Johnson, the man credited with creating the specialist mortgage lending market in the UK and an industry veteran of 40 years, has died aged 67.

Johnson, a passionate racehorse owner, was managing director of secured lending at Shawbrook Bank when he passed on 6 July.

He is considered a pioneer in the secured and commercial lending industries, and had a long career which included the creation of i-Group, Money Partners, Commercial First and Link Loans, as well as Shawbrook Bank.

He also had a successful career in horseracing, the pinnacle of which was winning the Grand National with Comply Or Die in 2008.

Robert Sinclair, chief executive of the Association of Finance Brokers, said,

“It was with great sadness that I learned that David had lost this particular battle. In life however he sponsored and supported some wonderful firms and initiatives. He was tireless in his support of the industry that he loved and the people who worked in it. He will be sadly missed. Our thoughts are with his family and close friends at this sad time.”
