Mobile applications for smartphones and tablet devices have yet to capture the imagination of mortgage advisers, research has found.

The latest Mortgage Solutions People’s Poll asked brokers whether they used apps and other mobile technology in their day-to-day business.

More than one-in-five brokers (22%) said they used mortgage broker apps for tablet and mobile devices on a regular basis with a further 19% stating they use them on occasion.

But a third of respondents (34%) said they had never used broker apps while 25% said they had used such tools in the past but has since stopped.

Nationwide is among the brands to offer mobile apps to brokers having launched two apps earlier this month covering both its residential proposition and The Mortgage Works buy-to-let brand.

Mortgage Brain has also reported strong download figures for its recently launched iPad sourcing system app. The application had been used more than 5,000 times in its first three months.

Andy Wilson, adviser at Andy Wilson Financial Services, said the use of technology can be a unique selling point for advisers.

“I bought a laptop which I thought I would use with clients but I haven’t really,” he said. “I have a smartphone with apps on there but it’s a bit small to use with a client. But using modern technology has to be a good selling point for any broker.”

“I would like to buy an iPad because it’s helpful to run quotes while you’re sat with a client to give them a rough idea of what’s available. If you can give the clients a rough idea what rates are then it shortens the sales process.

“Even so, I still like to go away and do lots of research because a client must feel like the broker has invested time in them.”
