Santander finally discards Abbey brand
Santander will cease intermediary mortgage lending through the now defunct Abbey National brand from Sunday 21 February.

The lender said it will also replace all Abbey branded customer facing literature including Key Facts Illustrations (KFIs), while sourcing systems will be updated to ensure all products are shown as Santander and not Abbey.

Santander purchased Abbey National in 2004 in a deal worth £8.9bn, which saw the Abbey brand dropped from branches six years later. Since then, the Abbey name has been retained on broker sourcing systems and intermediary applications, failing to reflect its consumer facing trade name.

The lender said the change would not impact brokers.

In a broker statement Santander, said: “We believe this simplification will create greater clarity by removing any potential brand confusion for you and your clients.”

Barclays made a similar move last year when it announced it would scrap the Woolwich brand used for its advised mortgage lending.
