The charity trades as StepChange Debt Charity and StepChange Debt Charity Scotland. In the first half of 2016 it provided free debt advice online or by telephone to 313,679 people struggling with bills including mortgage payments, utilities and unsecured credit.
Through StepChange Financial Solutions, the organisation also offers free mortgage and equity release advice.
Mike O’Connor, chief executive of StepChange Debt Charity, said: “Our FCA authorisation is testament to the charity’s work in providing the highest standards of free advice to people struggling with problem debt.
“There are millions of people struggling with problem debt who need help to get back on their feet. We provide the practical help people need and campaign for reforms that will take us closer to a society free from problem debt.”
The foundation had been operating under interim FCA permissions following the transfer of regulatory powers from the Office of Fair Trading to the FCA in April 2014.
