Adviser training programme earns network best apprenticeship award shortlist
Mortgage Advice Bureau (MAB), the first Stockmarket-listed mortgage advice firm, is a finalist for an all-sector national training awards scheme for its adviser recruitment programme.

The MAB Academy has been listed in the Best Apprenticeship Programme category of the Training Journal Awards. Last year’s winners included British Airways, House of Fraser and Transport for London.

The adviser training programme, which has been running since 2013, was initially established to create a route into employment in adviser roles for people outside of the financial services sector.

Head of learning and development at Mortgage Advice Bureau, David Bedlow said: “Primarily we wanted to set up the academy to support our adviser recruitment needs and to encourage new talent into the industry to ensure a sustainable level of growth for the MAB network.

The programme has worked with over 125 new recruits over four years, which the advice group said has increased retention above the industry standard.

Bedlow said: “One of our biggest success stories has been Hayley O’Reilly who came through the Academy as a complete novice. Hayley took home the Best Newcomer Award at the British Mortgage Awards and has now gone on to become a mentor for people coming through the Academy.”

Bedlow added initial learning and development is key but ongoing mentorship is also important in the early stages.

“We’ll all be keeping our fingers crossed for the awards,” he added.
The award winners will be announced on 5 December.
