Meanwhile, there was a slight increase in the number of freehold homes bought, up by 0.7 per cent on an annual basis to 72,327.
Overall 93,545 sales were received for registration by the Land Registry, compared to 81,742 in June and 85,667 in May.
The most expensive sale to take place over the month was a semi-detached property in Kensington and Chelsea which went for £10.45m. At the other end of the scale, the cheapest was a terraced property in Burnley which went for £18,000.
On commercial sales, the sold prices ranged from £35m for a property in Bristol to just £100 for one in Barnet.
Of the sales that took place over the month, 687 were for £1m or more: 390 of these were located in greater London, five were in the West Midlands, three were in greater Manchester and one was in Wales.
