Affordable housing completions jump by a fifth ‒ MHCLG
The number of affordable homes completed in the year to the end of March in England jumped by 22 per cent on the same period last year.

New data from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) showed that 57,485 affordable homes were built over the period.

This is up by more than a fifth on the previous year, and is the highest figure since 2014-15.

It also represents around a quarter (23 per cent) of the total number of new homes completed in the period. The MHCLG noted that this proportion has varied significantly since 2006-7, from a peak of 40 per cent in 2010-11 to a low of 16 per cent in 2015-16.

Two thirds of the new affordable homes were for rent, a proportion which has been falling since 2014-15, when it was 78 per cent.

More than nine out of 10 (92 per cent) of the affordable homes delivered were on new builds, a similar proportion to previous years.

There were also 61,056 starts on sites in England in 2018-19, up by 10 per cent on the year before.
