The Building Societies Association (BSA) has elected Simon Taylor, Melton Building Society’s chief executive, as its chair.

He will succeed Julie-Ann Haines, who was elected as chair last year and was chief executive of Principality Building Society until she stepped down earlier this year.

Taylor will take on the role from 21 November, and has been deputy chair of the BSA.

He has been Melton Building Society CEO for around five years, and before that was interim executive director at Saffron Building Society for around a year.

Prior to that, he was chief operating officer at Nottingham Building Society for around eight years and has also worked at Lloyds Banking Group (LBG) for around five years as a regional director.

Taylor said: “I’m delighted to be taking on the role of BSA chair at such an exciting time for the sector, with the government’s commitment to doubling the size of the mutual and cooperative economy.

“As BSA chair, I’m looking forward to engaging with our stakeholders to ensure that building societies and credit unions are valued as a key part of a properly diverse UK financial services sector, delivering value, choice and social improvement for our members today, and tomorrow.”

“I would like to thank Julie-Ann Haines for her leadership of the BSA this year, especially for all of her efforts in recruiting our new chief executive, Sarah Harrison.”

The BSA unveiled its Building Society Sector Growth Plan earlier this week, which called on the government and regulator to improve access to mutual capital and reform capital regulations to “drive inclusive growth and financial resilience”.
