New regulator ‘will not tolerate’ repeat offenders
The banks in Ireland were particularly poor in their lending practices, so in ordinary market conditions one might argue the losses are well deserved.
However, loss of confidence in the Irish banking system will affect ordinary people, so the Government has done the right thing so far in my view.
It is worth noting that while the boom was in full swing, the voters kept returning the Government that had not imposed any controls on the profligate spending based on construction.
