Star Letter 25/07/14
Each week Mortgage Solutions picks the most opinionated or thoughtful reader contributions from our article comments and letters to the editor.

Each week, we also round-up the best comments, emails and letters to the site and pick one reader contribution as our Star Letter. This week’s award goes to:

Broker firm defends lewd image in marketing campaign

Mr Cottle portrays himself and his firm as the vanguard of technological advancement in our industry. However he doesn’t appear to grasp the simple concept that if content is published upon the internet and is shared then it brings that content to the attention of others.

By inboxing your marketing, you target it to an audience that would presumably welcome the message, by placing it on a public forum, even his own LinkedIn page it means that people like me (who are not linked to Mr Cottle) see this distasteful advertisement whenever somebody linked to me engages with it. Mr Cottle’s view that “even ladies” were ok with his content shines a light on his thoughts about women in general.

I wonder if his female members of staff were all ok with it? They might have said they were, but could that be because their working environment means they feel unable to openly voice their feelings for fear of reprisal/or being belittled?

The finance industry is largely male dominated and in my view still has some archaic “nudge nudge wink wink” attitudes to women, therefore I don’t doubt that he had positive feedback a percentage of his audience has outdated/unacceptable views on women. I feel Mr Cottle’s advert has done nothing but throw petrol on this fire.
