Consumers warned over fake HSBC compensation claims
Consumers are being targeted by phishing emails offering financial compensation to fraud victims arranged by HSBC and the South African Reserve Bank on behalf of the City of London Police.

The email, titled ‘compensation fraud’, requests that individuals reply and provide their personal and financial information to arrange the compensation, which states that HSBC and the South African Reserve Bank have been chosen to handle the compensation claims.

Fraudsters who distributed the email are posing as the City of London Police’s National Fraud Intelligence Bureau and in some versions the Fraud Intelligence Unit.

A statement from the City of London Police said: “The email and attached letter are fraudulent and everything within it is completely untrue. If you receive an email of this nature please delete it immediately.”

Consumers can have their device checked by a professional and make a report to Action Fraud, the UK’s national fraud and cyber crime reporting centre if they believe they have become a victim of the fraudulent email.
