The number of first-time buyers needing financial help from their parents has more than doubled in the last six years, according to Clydesdale and Yorkshire Banks.

Research showed that 84% of first-time buyers now rely on getting support from the Bank of Mum and Dad in order to purchase a home, compared to 38% in 2005.

In addition, it found that 47% of properties bought by first-time buyers are purchased with a joint income, either as a couple or friends buying together.

Steve Reid, retail director for Clydesdale Bank, said: “It is becoming increasingly commonplace for first-time buyers to require financial help from their parents when buying their first home.

“At Clydesdale and Yorkshire Banks, we recognise that first-time buyers are vital to keeping the property market moving and are committed to helping them.”
