More than a third of intermediaries believe standard mortgage business levels will improve during the final quarter of the year.

Research from the The Intermediary Mortgage Lenders Association (IMLA) has found just under two thirds expected business to remain flat, with 2% predicting business would fall.

Of those intermediaries surveyed, almost half reported that mortgage market conditions have already improved in the third quarter, with just 14% saying conditions had worsened.

Buy-to-let and remortgaging will drive any uplift, while 44% of brokers predicted an increase in next-time buyers and a third said first-time buyers.

John Heron, chairman of IMLA, said: “This positive attitude from intermediaries is a reflection of the general improvement seen recently in the mortgage market. “The pick-up is slow but market conditions are gradually improving, particularly in the buy-to-let and remortgage markets.”

He added: “There has been the recent perception that mortgage deals are not available. This research indicates that good deals are out there and that intermediaries are strongly placed to help find them.”
