Reed took over from Angela Rayner, who resigned from her roles as Housing Secretary, deputy leader of the Labour Party and deputy Prime Minister following confirmation that she had underpaid stamp duty.
The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government hosted a roundtable with key developers and housebuilders today to talk about ways to ramp up housebuilding and remove barriers, including complex planning processes.
The government said there was a “blitz of new measures” expected to be announced in the coming weeks and months, including new towns across the country and the landmark Planning and Infrastructure Bill passing into law.
It said it was committed to accelerating housebuilding, pointing to the implementation of mandatory housing targets.
The government added that it had unblocked 100,000 homes via its New Homes Accelerator, invested £39bn into a Social and Affordable Homes Programme and put in millions of pounds to help unlock disused brownfield land.

Reed said: “I want us to build, baby, build, so we can put the key to a decent home into the hands of every single family that needs it. We are doubling down on our plans to unleash one of the biggest eras of building in our country’s history and we are backing the builders all the way.
“Through major planning reform and investment, we will break down the barriers to development and build the 1.5 million homes this country needs as part of our Plan for Change.”
