Former Lloyds TSB chairman Sir Brian Pitman is set to be named chairman of Virgin Money as part of its plans to make a push into British retail banking, Mortgage Solutions understands.

Pitman was an advisor to the company in its failed attempt to buy Northern Rock two years ago.

He worked for 18 years at Lloyds and was rumoured to be lined up as chairman of Virgin Money if it had taken over Northern Rock in early 2008.

Earlier this month, it bought Church House Trust in a deal worth £12.3m. The company announced this morning that all the conditions to the offer had been accepted, making the deal unconditional.
