Prospective buyers temporarily put their buying plans on hold, with activity down 7% on June last year, according to figures from Agency Express.
The West Midlands were hardest hit with a dramatic slump of 26.4% in the number of houses sold in June, followed by the South West where buyer activity fell 11.4%.
The number of deals signed in Wales also fell 10.6%, in the North East figures were down 8.8%, with the Capital down 7.7%. The North West and the East Midlands were the only two areas to report rises of 10.5% and 6.7% respectively.
The cities that suffered the most in June were Birmingham down 34.7%, Nottingham down 32%, Exeter down 31.7%, Southampton down 27.8% and Glasgow down 27.4%.
Only a few cities witnessed an increase in monthly house sales with Leicester leading the way with a 44.0% rise followed by Manchester up 37.0% and Milton Keynes up 30.1%.
Stephen Watson, managing director, Agency Express, said: “Now that England have crashed out of the tournament after a number of lacklustre displays, we can expect homebuyers to return to the housing market with real conviction. With interest rates still at record low levels and house prices having stabilised, we can expect to see a surge in house sales in July before the holiday season kicks in.”
However, in June 1.8% new houses were put up for sale, which Agency Express suggested probably resulted from the scrapping of Home Information Packs.
