Wanted: Repo agents with own stab vests
Mortgage Solutions' exclusive columnist, The Insider, explains why being an agent for a mortgage lender can prove a dangerous occupation.

In a highly stressed situation, such as potentially having your house repossessed, all sorts of emotions and extremes can come into play.

The job of a Court Bailiff or even an agent representing a mortgage company isn’t one I’d particularly savour.

A couple of months ago, an agent representing a mortgage company knocked on a door to begin repossessing the house.

The door opened and three men appeared and pummelled the agent with baseball bats.

The agent also ended up with two stab wounds to the chest. The men were arrested for attempted murder and all agents from that particular firm now wear stab vests.

At an eviction in Northern Ireland, a small mob of local residents attacked and saw off the court officials and then proceeded to riot.

It is not unheard of for death threats to be issued. Of particular concern are rural properties or farms where firearms are likely to be easily available.

Where we have some indication there may be trouble along these lines, the police have to be present, sometimes en masse.

No, all in all, I don’t think I would want to do their work.
