Three-quarters of brokers call for lower Help to Buy limit
Three-quarters of mortgage brokers believe the Help to Buy scheme should be restricted to houses worth £300,000 or less.

As the government comes under increasing pressure to make changes to the Help to Buy scheme the latest Mortgage Solutions People’s Poll asked brokers if they felt the scheme should be restricted to properties worth £300,000 or under.

Three-quarters of respondents said they felt the scheme’s upper limit should be lowered from its current £600,000 ceiling to this level compared to 26% who believed otherwise.

Bank of England governor Mark Carney admitted on Sunday there were ‘deep, deep structural problems’ beneath the UK housing market.

David Cameron subsequently responded and said he would look at changes to the scheme.

“Of course, we will consider any changes that are proposed by Mark Carney,” Cameron told the BBC’s Today programme.

“But, as he said, this is a well-targeted scheme and it’s helped tens of thousands of people get on the housing ladder and to have mortgages.”

This echoed comments made by Nick Clegg on Sunday in which he warned the government may need to make changes to the scheme.

“I think if he [Carney] says that we need to pare back on some of the government schemes like Help to Buy, then I think we should do so,” the Deputy Prime Minister said.
