The tool uses generative AI to analyse and summarise GP medical reports, which allow underwriters to make faster, more informed decisions, while still maintaining accuracy and customer care.
GP medical reports can be lengthy – often over 90 pages – and the tool will summarise them, filter out irrelevant details and highlight key information.
The summaries will be reviewed by underwriters, who will then make the final decision and cut processing times.
The lender will roll out the tool to its underwriting teams from 28 November, and it comes after 18 months of testing and controls.
Aviva said it has already processed around 1,000 cases in active test phases, adding that the tangible benefits include “significantly improving turnaround times”.

Robert Morrison, chief underwriting officer at Aviva, said: “Protection underwriting in our industry has faced challenges for some time, with underwriters needing to review lengthy digital medical reports, which can be extremely time-consuming.
“I’m delighted that we’re announcing how Aviva is leading the way with this exciting innovation, and the new summarisation tool will deliver real benefits for customers and underwriters alike. By leveraging generative AI responsibly, we’re improving efficiency without compromising accuracy or care.”
Earlier this month, the firm announced that its equity release sales grew 39% year-on-year in the first nine months of the year, while protection sales fell.
