The first Mortgage Sleep Out event, aimed at raising awareness of homelessness and poverty across the UK, will take place on Friday 30 November 2018 across the country.

The idea for the event came after Brightstar CEO Rob Jupp’ and Maria Harris, Atom Bank director of retail mortgages, discussed the problem of homelessness on Twitter and suggested fund-raising.

number of mortgage brokers and lenders voiced their interest in taking part in a potential event.

Jupp initially wrote on Twitter: “Shocking how many ‘rough sleepers’ there are in London. I can’t remember a time where there have been so many. It’s a national outrage”

In response Maria Harris, Atom Bank director of retail mortgages, suggested a sleepout to raise funds and awareness.

More than 40 firms confirmed their interest within a few days.

Around 4,750 people were estimated to be sleeping rough on any given night in England in 2017, according to official figures.

Mortgage Sleep Out is to raise funds for national charity End Youth Homelessness that works to eradicate homelessness.

Businesses and individuals are asked to register to host and organise their own local sleepout, with a network of local events across the UK contributing to one national effort on Friday 30 November 2018.

Jupp said: “We have been overwhelmed by the response of the mortgage industry in tackling this cause and we want to harness that support and create a network across the UK of #MortgageSleepOut events, organised locally by willing businesses and individuals all contributing to one national effort on Friday 30 November 2018.”
